The Foreign Language Department intends to provide each student with the opportunity to achieve literacy and oral proficiency in one or more of the seven languages offered. Students are encouraged to study more than one language simultaneously.

Students who have limited English proficiency are eligible for placement in an English Language Education program. Students whose home language is not English will be recommended for testing and possible placement in this program. Placement of students is based on proficiency and not necessarily grade level.

At PVMHS, we offer seven languages. They are: Latin, Spanish, German, French and Italian; we have two community/heritage languages: Portuguese and Modern Greek.

We participate in two national exams in French and German and have been consistent in scoring in the top1 or 2 percentile nationally. We offer two AP courses in French and Spanish. Those students have consistently scored in the 3,4, and 5 ranges.

W e offer cultural/language trips to Spain , France , Quebec, Germany, Portugal, Greece, and Italy . Students have the opportunity to participate in the community by doing translations, sometimes mentoring ELL students in the elementary schools and participating every year in the International Festival. Every year, the high school celebrates Foreign Language Week at which time the school is expose to different cultures and traditions. We have a top of the line language lab that assists the students with the oral and written proficiency of language learning and exposes them to real-life situations.

Students participate in extra-curricula activities by joining the International Club, the French Club, the Greek Club, the Italian/Latin Club, the Portuguese Club and the ELL Club.
